Valkenburg was discovered as a tourist town in 1833. The beautiful railway station that looks like a castle invited many people to stop off here. Tourists discovered the impressive castle ruins, the caves and the beautiful surroundings. Valkenburg is one of the oldest tourist towns in the Netherlands, and houses the first tourist information office in the country.
Valkenburg is also called ‘spa village’ and ‘marlstone city’. In the city and its surroundings, the warm yellow colour of the marlstone is visible both under and above the ground.
Valkenburg has many attractions, such as castles, museums, anmd theme parks. The Thermae 2OOO spa and Holland Casino on top of the Cauberg are also well-known.
Groups can go on underground or aboveground mountain bike tours, or go zip-lining and abseiling. Pleasant shops, restaurants, terraces, the river Geul and many historic buildings are typical of Valkenburg. From the outskirts of Valkenburg you can go on wonderful walking and cycling tours through the South Limburg Hills.
